Hard to advance
Technical Instructional Designer and Trainer (Former Employee) –  MDApril 6, 2018
USP has interesting work and a dedicated staff. But it's prone to constant overhauls of its company structure (at least 1-2 a year), leaving people uncertain of how to react and expectations. They relish change for change's sake, rather than because it makes good overall business strategy. The current CEO comes from a business background and tries to run this non-profit organization like a business, with some positive and negative results.

The culture is "high performance", which pretty much means you can expect to work overtime on a regular basis if you want to advance. And, in some areas of the company, there is no opportunity for advancement even if you do work hard. The culture is pretty political so network, self-promotion, and ingratiation are a necessity to succeed.
Pros
Free soda and coffee. Company activities
Cons
Not a good work-life balance if you want to advance

Great management, tedious job
Label Technician (Former Employee) –  Rockville, MDJanuary 26, 2018
I had some of the best managers while working here.
The job itself is very tedious. Because of the hazardous chemicals we worked with you would have the strange combination of feeling both bored out of your mind and also terrified for your life.
Pros
Great managers, 30 min lunch plus two 15 min breaks, access to gym
Cons
very boring

Strong Mission - With a history of non-visionary senior leadership!
Staff (Current Employee) –  MDFebruary 6, 2015
Advancement to management positions is based on the good old boys network. This inevitably means you end up with quite a few leaders who are great at driving basic task, building internal networks and not much else. As individuals look to move up or maintain their senior positions, this has a tendency to cultivate a passive-aggressive culture.
Pros
Great benefits.

Fun, small place to work
Manager, Web Technologies (Former Employee) –  Rockville, MDNovember 15, 2011
For a non-profit the IT shop was a fun, great, collaborative place to work. It has been a few years and I am not sure what all has changed, but it was great at the time. Career opportunities were there for folks who worked for them.
