Job Culture
Toxic culture in Tax
Senior associate (Former Employee) –  CBDMay 5, 2019
I was from the Corporate Tax Planning and Compliance department, where I worked for approx 4 years.

Management is entrenched and blissfully unaware of sentiment on the ground. They favour staff who go out of their way to bootlick, and overlook how these staff will push their actual work to other staff members who are already overworked and under-appreciated. The key issue with the management is that the few who are aware of the extremely toxic culture do not make any attempt to stop it.

Staff are divided into two camps - the bootlickers and the non-bootlickers. The former group will go out of their way to curry favour with management, and as a result have a lot of influence during day to day work and the appraisal process. The latter group will be dumped with significantly more work, yet get rated poorly by the management simply because they do not try to suck up.

Staff turnover has been overwhelming high in the past three years. More than half the department is new. Experienced staff leave simply because their hard work (working ot past midnight almost everyday and being expected to come back to office on weekends) is not appreciated, and the toxic culture makes it unbearable. This is not the place for you unless you can withstand being manipulative, throwing your friends under the bus, and forsaking your morals for the sake of your career.
Pros
Wide exposure
Cons
Toxic culture, vicious cliques in the office, indifferent management

Assistant Manager (Former Employee) –  SingaporeNovember 20, 2018
Culture: People are generally nice and collaborative. Work life balance is generally observed.
Work: Work can get boring after sometime given the advisory nature. Sometimes management push for projects that expand the team capabilities but generally very hard to deliver

You'll work with people who constantly complain about no work-life balance and want to resign but they are the same individuals that perpetuate the 'overtime' culture. Expect working past midnight daily to meet expectation of managers and seniors alike. At times, unnecessary work is done that leads to working overtime. The work place thrive of inefficiency and its something you have to live with, working in this industry.
Pros
Younger working environment
Cons
Extremely inefficient

Challenging but Rewarding
Senior Associate (Former Employee) –  SingaporeJanuary 21, 2018
A typical day is difficult to describe since the work at KPMG is very dynamic and never the same. On most days you can tear up your to-do list by 10 because the day goes in so many different directions. This is what makes the job so enjoyable and the worst aspect of it at the same time

Working at KPMG gives us the opportunity to work with different clients from different industries, collaboratively with our local and global teams. There are always new things to experience and learn from.

The management team here are always supportive, both in the aspects of our career, as well as our personal growth.
Pros
Global and local opportunities

Fun place to work at
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  SingaporeNovember 20, 2017
KPMG Singapore feels pretty much like a university. As a graduate or someone in the mid 20/30s, it is easy to find friends/Colleagues of the same age group, there are tonnes of fun activities like welcome night, dinner and dance, monday drinks and even sports day organised yearly.

Best part of this job is the people, but of course as with every company there will be issues in retaining talent.

One thing KPMG Singapore lacks is the grooming of employees who have been with them since day 1 (first job). At a certain level, the management becomes a little more selfish and forgets that the employees come first.

Nonetheless, still enjoyed my time there.
Pros
Tonnes of parties and fun
Cons
Poor employee management of career

Senior Associate, Management Consulting (Current Employee) –  Raffles PlaceOctober 31, 2017
The working culture is dynamic and rapidly changes. Although you may have a reporting manager/director you are free to speak and work on various projects (provided that there are projects to be on and the engagement manager wants you on those projects).

Management is open to discussion and ideas regardless of position.

KPMG Workplace
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  RafflesNovember 29, 2016
Generally, working in audit is pretty stressful given the long hours and multiple engagements ongoing at the same time. This definitely improves the individual's project management. Most of the time, in every audit engagement, it consists of a team of members from various ranks. Working as the team lead will helps to improve people management skills according to each of the member's ability.

In audit environment, most of the time employees are having tough time coping with multiple engagements and have to go through long working hours to meet the deadline.

Good learning platform
Senior Audit Associate (Current Employee) –  SingaporeJune 24, 2016
A typical day at work involves managing and monitoring the overall audit engagement progress. We are required to display good time management skills so as to juggle between different engagements that we may be handling. Good leadership skills is a must to guide the team towards successful completion of the audit work given the tight deadline we are always subjected to.

The hardest part of the job is to manage client's relationship with the audit team as well as the long working hours we have to put in toe complete our work.

The most enjoyable part of the job is that we are able to meet new people when we are working on a new engagement. I also gain satisfaction upon completion of the audit work.
Pros
Work flexibility, not so much of a desk-bound job
Cons
Long hours

Good learning environment
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  Raffles PlaceNovember 12, 2015
KPMG provides a very good learning environment. The learning and development department provides trainings during non-peak periods and most managers are willing to impart their knowledge to the younger ones.

When on engagements, soft skills like management and communication skills are needed for project management and client management. Even within the engagement team, the senior has to manage the manager's expectation and at the same time, manage his associates so that the audit will run smoothly.

Although it is a good learning environment, turnover is high due to the long hours during the peak period. However, the best part of the job is also to meet new people and interact with them.
Pros
Able to meet many people, good learning environment
Cons
Long hours, high tunover

Fast paced, Modern management style
Senior auditor (Former Employee) –  16 Raffles Quay, Hong Leong Building, #22-00December 12, 2014
My typical day at KPMG will always start off from client and partner management to reviewing of audit work papers in accordance to audit strategies, planning and procedures previously agreed and signed off with engagement partner. This includes handling any queries raised by the team and solving any issues on hand and to update the status report of audit.

The enjoyable part will be to discover important management point or to help identify any potential control failures as these are value adding to the client and increase the quality of audit work.
This includes summarising all the management points and to raise discussions with the CFO before arranging with Managing director or Audit committee together with our engagement manager and partner.

The hardest part will be to gather all necessary audit evidences to support any case of management point. This is tedious but fruitful as the process of investigation allows for deeper understanding of the area of weak controls and increases the value of audit work. It also opens up potential business opportunities with the client (i.e. Corporate group tax services , transfer pricing etc)

What i have learnt is a deeper understanding of the financial health of different companies, their risk management system and a greater exposure on the application of many key accounting standards (ie. Business combination, Financial instruments, Leasing, Investment properties etc)
Pros
Strong training materials and expert knowledge support
Cons
Long hours
